Erection of the penis occurs when about 100 to 125ml of blood flows into it as a result of direct sexual stimulation (i.e. friction), thinking about sex or commonly both.
Erection also occurs during the rapid eye movement (REM) phase of sleep.
This inflow of blood is due to a complex physiological mechanism that has only been understood in the last 30 years.
What happens is that the division of the autonomic nervous system called 'the parasympathetic' causes a release of the gas nitric oxide (NO) inside the penis.
Nitric oxide activates an enzyme called guanylatecyclase. Its effect is to increase the tissue
levels of a chemical named cyclic guano sine monophosphate. This widens the blood
vessels in the penis – so that blood flows into the organ. That makes it stiff.
At the same time, muscles located near the base of the penis contract and help prevent the blood from escaping. So at this point, the male has a rigid organ that is firm enough to penetrate his partner.
Many people have the idea that during erection, the penis should point straight upwards. In fact, the celebrated found that this is not so.
